There will be an invasive weed pull at the Potomac Greens Park and Wetlands on Saturday, August 11 at 9:30am, led by Rod Simmons, Alexandria’s Natural Resource Manager and Plant Ecologist.
***Details: The event will start with a sign-in (the City tracks volunteer hours) and a short briefing and walk-through to decide which areas and plant species to tackle first, such as the champion Staghorn Sumac. All are welcome to stay for as long as they can. Even 30 minutes of work will make a difference. Rod will provide some tools and gloves, but don’t hesitate to bring your own.
***Gear: Wear long pants, closed-toe shoes or boots that you don’t mind getting muddy, and a hat. High-SPF sunscreen is a must. Bug spray may also be helpful. If you own waders, please bring them; depending on the tidal status, we may be able to get off the boardwalk to clear a chunk of marsh. Also bring plenty of water.
***Directions: From Slaters Ln., turn on to Potomac Greens Dr. between Buzz and Rustico restaurants. Potomac Greens ends at Carpenter Rd. Please park on the street across from the playground. The path to the wetlands begins behind the benches and playground equipment at the back of the playground.
***Contact: Erin Winograd. erin@winograd.us If you can make it, please send her a note so she can give Rod a rough headcount and fill in as much of the volunteer form as possible in advance.
