The PYMIG held a virtual meeting on March 28, 2022, at 7:00 pm via Zoom. The City posted the meeting’s agenda, video, and presentation materials here. (Note: The 76-minute video and presentation materials will help you understand the synopsis below).
Traffic Concerns along Slaters Lane. Many residents have noted that a ‘right-on-red light’ turn from Slaters to US 1 is no longer allowed. This change was NOT related to Metrorail station construction. It relates to a program known as Vision Zero, a multidisciplinary, multi-national safety program to reduce pedestrian injuries/deaths that City Council adopted in January, 2017. You can find an in-depth discussion of Vision Zero here. The Traffic & Environmental Services representative did report the timing of the green right-hand turn arrow from Slaters Lane to US 1 has been increased to smooth traffic flow (slides 3-5).
North Potomac Yard Project Overview. A representative from Planning & Zoning presented an overview of the North Potomac Yard Phase 1 redevelopment plan. The Phase 1 area will include the new Virginia Tech Innovation Campus, apartment buildings, and office buildings (slides 6-13).
Construction Update. You can find current photos of the construction of the Metrorail Station, north and southwest entry Pavilions, and AC Switchgear building on slides 14-32.
Future Schedule. Slide 33 contains the near-term construction schedule through July 2022.
Station Cut-Over Overview. The current Metrorail tracks are located to the West of the station. PYC will connect new tracks through the Metrorail station from September 10-18, 2022. WMATA will then conduct system and train tests from September 19-October 22, 2022. When complete, trains will pass through the Metrorail station without stopping starting October 24, 2022. The Metrorail station has an estimated opening of late Fall 2022 (slide 34).
