Parking Survey Results – Next Steps

Dear PG neighbors–

In response to yesterday’s message about the results of the parking district survey, the Communications Committee received questions about the City’s block-by-block breakdown of our results and the petition process for blocks that didn’t meet the required response threshold. This message provides more info on those topics.

Unfortunately the process to determine the signage for each block was not well explained to the Board by the City and also caught us by surprise, but we feel that the most efficient way to respond will be to complete the fairly straightforward and simple petition process, the deadline for which is more than a month away, on June 24.

The first question on the parking ballot survey was whether or not a resident supported the establishment of the special parking district within PG. The second question, if you supported the district, was to choose one of two options: (a) standard parking restriction (2-hr parking 8am-11pm, Monday through Saturday for all of PG), or (b) allowing individual PG blocks to petition the City for customized parking regulations.

It wasn’t explained to us prior to the issuance of the survey ballots that at least 51% of the residents on a block needed to respond in the affirmative to option (a) to adopt the standard parking restriction, and that option (b) would go into effect if that 51% threshold wasn’t met. The City has since explained to us that this is how it works throughout Alexandria and that’s why you’ll notice that parking restrictions in, say, Old Town often differ block by block.

The next step for each block that didn’t support the option (a) parking restriction is to complete a petition of the residents on their block with their desired parking restriction. The petition is here, pages 3 and 4.

Although this isn’t what we expected, we hope this explanation helps. If you have any further questions, two Board members will be at the Clubhouse on Saturday, 1-2pm, to address any concerns and encourage block residents to meet and discuss their options for going forward.

All best–
The PG HOA Board
