The PYMIG held a virtual meeting via Zoom on August 23, 2021, at 7:00 pm. The meeting’s purpose was for the builders (Potomac Yard Constructors or PYC) to update the Metrorail Station’s progress and address the future construction schedule. The agenda, presentation materials, and 1-hour video of the meeting are available here (Note: The presentation material slides will significantly help you understand the synopsis below).
Metrorail Station Roof. PYC has installed the steel trusses for the Metrorail station’s mezzanine and platform roofs. There are steel panels on the east and west sides of the roof, and there will be a glass skylight running down the center (slides 3-14).
Mezzanine and Platforms. Work continues in the interior of the Metrorail station mezzanine and platforms (slides 7-21)
North Pavilion. PYC continues constructing the North pavilion interior and has installed the pedestrian bridge that connects the North pavilion to the Knuckle (slides 31-35).
Southwest Pavilion. PYC has completed the substructure of the Southwest pavilion and is beginning to construct piers to support the pedestrian bridge that will connect the Southwest pavilion to the Knuckle (slide 41-46).
Pedestrian/Emergency Vehicle Access Path. A retaining wall will support the 1000-foot path Potomac Greens residents will use to access the Metrorail station. PYC previously said they would drive 125-150 piles to support the retaining wall. The latest design increases the number to 200 piles. PYC will begin to drive piles in mid-to-late November, starting at the Metrorail station and working their way south towards our houses. However, since the piles will not be supporting a vertical load, they do not have to be driven down to bedrock (20:20-22:00 of the video). PYC provided additional details in response to questions and stated pile driving would last approximately 5-6 weeks (40:30-42:32 of the video). Note: Alexandria allows pile driving 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday-Friday and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday. Pile driving on Sunday is prohibited.
Future Schedule. You can find the short-term construction schedule through December on slide 47.
